New Mexico is one of the most interesting places on earth. I’m not just saying that because I live here. It’s true, and the following facts make it so:
New Mexico has more cattle than people.
There are only about 12 people per square mile. Source.
Last year, NM produced 65,000 tons of chile.
That’s a lot of chile. Source.
New Mexico license plates
the classic red and yellow ones—are the only ones in the country that say USA. The three letters were added in 1969 to (sadly) help people in other states know where we’re from. Source.
New Mexico is the fifth largest state in the United States,
but lakes and rivers cover only .02% of New Mexico’s total surface area.
Dinosaur footprints
More than 500,100-million-year-old dinosaur footprints have been identified and preserved at Clayton Lake State Park.
PhDs
New Mexico has the most PhDs per capita than any other state.
New Mexicans over 100 years old are tax-exempt
but only if they are not dependents. Source.
Santa Fe
Santa Fe, New Mexico is the oldest capital city in the United States. Santa Fe is also the highest capital city in the United States at 7,000 feet above sea level. Since New Mexico’s climate is so dry, 3/4 of the roads are left unpaved (the roads don’t wash away)
